The Goldilocks Principle and Yoga
The Goldilocks principle is a paradigm for describing something being “just right,” not too much and not too little. It can be used to describe astronomical phenomena, the economy, biology, and even physical activity - like yoga.
But how can I use this principle to create and maintain a personalized and sustainable yoga practice, you ask?
Easy! Well, in theory at least.
Finding Your Perfect Yoga Practice
An actual ‘perfect’ practice is a yoga practice that is beneficial, supportive, accessible, and personalized to each of us. The challenge is finding this for ourselves.
Getting back in the flow
As I slowly and gently resume the more physical aspects of my yoga practice, I am reflecting on how important it is to check expectations at the door and just simply meet myself honestly where I am without judgement. I am not the same mentally or physically as I was prior to our daughter’s arrival so I should not expect my practice to be the same.
Is yoga against my religion?
This is not an easy question to ask or answer for many as it depends on each individual’s perspective and their understanding of their spiritual practice or religion and their basic understanding of yoga. It also depends on how and where they are introduced to yoga - what format (in-person or videos), the instructor(s), or the studio environment itself. All of these things can impact one’s understanding of yoga and its applications on and off the mat.
Yoga for Chronic Pain - Movement as Medicine
Yoga can be an amazing part of this continuum of care. As part of your care management plan, yoga can help get you moving and deepen you connection to your body allowing you to become more in tune with the signals it sends. In my opinion, this is best achieved through private sessions, much like physical therapy is done. This will allow the client and instructor to build a relationship and specifically tailor each session to address the client’s needs and goals.
